On Nov. 20, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a department-wide restructuring. This included the creation of new offices entirely, as well as several office merges, expansions, and apparent eliminations. Questions remain regarding the implementation of these changes, as some DOE offices were created by statute and are funded specifically through appropriations law. See Tiber Creek’s breakdown of DOE office mergers here.
At a top level, the DOE is headed by the Office of the Secretary, under which there are three major suboffices, each run by a respective undersecretary (Offices of Energy; Science; and National Security/National Nuclear Security Administration), along with a handful of offices reporting directly to the Office of the Secretary. See the updated DOE reorganization chart here.
